"Systematic approach based on science of homeopathy & application of modern science to homeopathy"

By Dr Vijay Shah 19-Oct-2024

My name is Dr. Vismaya Verlekar. I completed my BHMS in 2022 December. During my last year and internship, I did various certificate courses to learn different ways of Homeopathic practice such as Sankaran method, Predictive method, etc. I also assisted various doctors from different specialties, starting with GP, pediatrician, gastroenterologist and did observership in a hospital to learn all procedures such as giving injections, Ryles tube insertion, Catheter insertion, ABG, vein flow insertion, sutures, etc. The last 6 months of internship I assisted senior homeopath Dr. Trupti Shah to learn everything needed for homeopathy practice so that I can start my own practice after completing BHMS. I came to know about Mission to Cure and Dr. Vijay Shah through her. So I decided to join after my internship.

Initially I was nervous about my performance at the clinic. The method of practice was very different from what I had seen, so I was seeing something completely fresh and new. Compared to what I had learnt, this method was very basic and fixed for all the cases. There was a systematic approach which I was learning gradually through different cases taken. Throughout the past 19 months, I have become more skilled in case taking and analysis of every case. I have learnt the importance of examination of each and every patient, the value of external signs from both, medical and homeopathic point of view. As I continue with M2C, I am hopeful of becoming better equipped at handling any case that comes in. I am certain about imbibing the method followed here as it helps me give better results in my own practice too.

The Thursday lectures by Dr Vijay Shah are very effective in clearing our concepts about the origin of diseases to how homeopathy works in every disease. For eg. In rheumatoid arthritis, RA factor and Anti CCP are the markers for diagnosis. Where do these markers come from in the blood, where do allopathic medicines act and where do homeopathic medicines act, everything was explained with complete clarity by Dr. Vijay Shah. Learning in such a way helps enhance our bookish knowledge and also makes us better equipped in explaining the patients what they are suffering from. The Thursday lectures also include discussions on how to analyse cases homeopathically, using Hahnemann’s, Hering’s and Boenninghausen’s methods, how to come to a remedy that will be individualistic to every case. It helps us unlearn a lot of practices that have no scientific logic such as suppression theory, law of direction of cure, excessive probing into mentals and so on and aids in learning practices that are proven with science and by experience of positive follow ups of patients.

Starting from case taking itself, we are trained to only take relevant history which should include preliminary data, all the important details of the patients’ present and past illnesses, their changed disposition, prominent mentals, physical generals, etc. We are also being trained to have our own observation about the patient and mention it. The reaction of the patient during acutes is also and important factor that may help in differentiating between remedies, so that also should be taken in detail. After which comes examination of the patient which gives important clues towards diagnosis of the disease clinically as well as shows the external manifestations of psora homeopathically. Based on collection of all above points, the remedy is chosen and the prescription is made. This systematic approach is followed for all patients, which makes it organized for us to take any case, irrespective of clinical diagnosis.

Follow ups are also similarly organized so as to maintain a discipline in practice. Every follow up is rechecked for external signs which gives a hint on whether our selected medicine was correct or not, and whether we should continue or change the dose. Even if it is a chronic case, every follow up has to be carefully investigated and the patient should be examined each time to guage the effect of remedy given. If needed, even certain investigations are advised to the patient to better understand the intensity of their illness. Along with clinical examination, being updated with latest medical advancements is very essential to know which investigation is most appropriate for each illness. Constant updation is very vital, this also makes the patient feel confident in you as their physician. Another important aspect I learned here is that every patient is explained in simple words about their suffering, where it is originating form, what to include and avoid in lifestyle to maintain good health. This gives a holistic approach to each patient and build the rapport between the doctor and patient. This has been imbibed by me in my own practice too and the response is very delightful. The patients feel satisfied after the visit and it brings goodwill as a doctor.

Another aspect about M2c that I was impressed with and immediately adapted in my practice is the use of Disposition software. It helps to keep records of all our patients in a systematic manner, which makes it handy to use and improves clinic practice. This software eliminates the use of excess paper so is also environment friendly.

Through my experience in this clinic, I am learning the way our masters used to practice homeopathy and imbibing the instructions given by Hahnemann, Boenninghausen and Hering for analysis of the case. Unlearning various abstract approaches and practicing these simple approaches is a task im trying to understand. But surely, with practice and Dr. Vijay Shah Sir’s guidance, I will get there and also succeed in my own practice.
